Con respecto al artículo “Nueva esperanza contra el paludismo”, firmado por CARLOS GUSTAVO MÉNDEZ, publicado en la edición del 10 de Mayo de 2015.
Tiene razón el columnista. La malaria es una verdadera calamidad de salud pública, especialmente para la gente más pobre del mundo, como la del África subsahariana, donde mata alrededor de un millón de personas cada año, siendo niños menores de 5 años la mayoría.
Desde esa perspectiva cualquier iniciativa enfocada en la solución de un problema tan agudo debe ser respaldada y aplaudida, sin embargo debo hacer, respetuosamente, algunas precisiones al respecto: RST,S /AS01 la vacuna de Glaxo, ha sido asociada a episodios severos de fiebre, convulsiones y meningitis, y, lo más grave, los datos con que se presentó en las publicaciones científicas fueron incompletos, un pecado mortal
-y mortífero- en el mundo científico.
Un artículo publicado en la revista NATURE, una de las más importantes, reconocidas y serias del mundo, bajo el título “Malaria vaccine gives disappointing results”, ilustra al respecto. Ver el link:

RST,S /AS01 es una vacuna destinada a la venta, lo cual no es malo en sí mismo teniendo en cuenta que el objeto primario de la industria farmacéutica es ganar dinero, mientras la producida en Colombia es casi gratuita. La de Glaxo, se estima, costaría alrededor de 25 dólares por dosis mientras la de Patarroyo costará alrededor de 20 centavos de dólar, lo cual la hace realmente accesible para quienes la necesitan, los niños y la gente más pobre de Colombia y del mundo.
Los resultados de RST,S /AS01, 34%, son inferiores o parecidos, en el mejor de los casos, a los conseguidos por la SPf66 de Patarroyo hace más de 25 años, que estuvo entre el 30% y el 60%. Si esos niveles de protección, verificables y a disposición de quien quiera examinarlos no son un resultado exitoso, entonces todas las demás son un fracaso estruendoso. Las razones por las que se descartó son de orden económico, estratégico y hasta político, si se tiene en cuenta que uno de los grupos con mayor interés en la investigación es el Ejército de los Estados Unidos.
La versión moderna de la SPf66, COLFAVAC, resultado de 20 años de investigación continua, tiene una eficacia demostrada en monos superior al 85%. Las pruebas no se realizan directamente en humanos.
El Dr. Pedro Alonso, uno de los promotores de la vacuna de Glaxo, es discípulo del Dr. Patarroyo, sigue su metodología química y trabaja en una vacuna que protege, teóricamente, durante el estadío hepático del parásito. COLFAVAC es una vacuna multiestadío, es decir, que protege tanto en la fase inicial de la infección como durante el estadío sanguíneo, que es cuando el parásito, llamado merozoito, destruye los glóbulos rojos produciendo los típicos accesos febriles y de frío que produce la enfermedad.
Hago las anteriores precisiones con el objeto de que la información proporcionada a los lectores de EL UNIVERSAL sea confiable y esté bien documentada. No siempre mirar hacia afuera nos da la mejor perspectiva de los asuntos. Ni todo lo que brilla es oro.
