Estuve pensando por estos días sobre la inminente desaparición de los burros, estando en el pueblo de Chinú - Córdoba en un intercambio cultural, pude notar que en las mismas calles que en otrora circulara una buena cantidad de contertulios sobre los lomos de estos nobles animales, solo con el armónico sonar de sus cascos contra el pavimento, ahora circulaban gran cantidad de motos ruidosas y humeantes, que se desaparecían por una calle y aparecían por otra a gran velocidad; me consolaba el pensar, que más adentro, como cuando uno va hacia Carbonero, que es un camino de herradura y fincas a ciertas distancias una de otras, grandes pastizales y potreros hermosos, dedicadas a la ganadería y agricultura, eran indispensables los burros, pero no era así, en un marco macondiano encontré las motos con angarillas en la parte del parrillero cargando leña y leche, trabajo que antes hacían los burros; levanté mi mirada sobre el alambrado en busca de divisar alguno pastando por ahí y solo en una de 12 fincas que pasé vi uno que por su pelaje limpio y regordete caí en cuenta que no estaba siendo utilizado para labores del campo, tal vez estaba ahí dentro del potrero por el buen corazón de su amo que decidió esperar su muerte natural.
Hace unos 35 años, por estos mismos caminos, de tierra rojiza y polvorienta, recorría Andrés Paternina unos seis kilómetros desde Cascajal hasta Doña María, en unas cuatro horas, para ir a visitar a mis tíos en la finca Yadilandia sobre el lomo de un burro blanquecino de buen pasó y un porte envidiable; cuando llegaba a la finca hablaba con mi tío Julio acerca de las bondades de este animal, mi tío se lamentaba por no tener uno así; hoy en día sus hijos y nietos van en cinco minutos sobre el tanque de gasolina de sus máquinas motorizadas. Por aquellos tiempos la única moto que pasaba por aquel paraje era la del dentista que iba cada seis meses a sacar muelas y a llevar las chapas encargadas en su última visita.
En la ciudad el panorama es más desolador aún, las nuevas leyes prohíben los carruajes de tracción animal, es increíble leer en los diarios que ahora los niños que practican el pandillismo se adiestran en dar puñaladas en las barrigas de los burros que encuentran a su paso, en algún momento a nadie le interesará cultivarlos y cuidarlos. A comienzos del próximo siglo solo existirán sus fotografías y serán vistos como los nuevos dinosaurios; estos animales no tienen almas dolientes como los toros de lidia, aunque viéndolo bien los “huelguistas que protegen los animales” tienen pretensiones políticas y protestar por un burro no da el mismo impacto que protestar por las corridas de toros.
Ojalá y el campo nunca deje de ser campo con sus costumbres, con su aire libre, con las bondades de su gente, con sus gallinas, pavos, mulos, burros, caballos y esos corazones rebosantes de nobleza incrustados en el pecho de los campesinos de manos callosas, de miradas alegres, dicharacheros, laboriosos, y que los burros nunca dejen de ser útiles para el ser humano; es ilusión.
